Mugabe fights for his political life
HARARE, Zimbabwe - The word is out: The Spar supermarket has bread at only $7 million a loaf. People rush to the shelf duly marked $7 million, but by the time they reach the till with their hyper-inflated Zimbabwean dollars, the price is up to $25 million.

That equals just 62 American cents, more than a teacher makes in a week. "How can we afford to eat that?" a woman exclaims. Customers leave their loaves at the counter and walk out with their brick-sized bundles of bank notes, angry and disconsolate.

Daily scenes of struggle with the world's highest inflation are the dark backdrop to an election Saturday in which Robert Mugabe is fighting to prolong his 28-year-old presidency, outpolled by his main opponent and accused of laying elaborate plans to rig the vote.

UN OKs Islamic text against defamation
GENEVA - The top U.N. rights body on Thursday passed a resolution proposed by Islamic countries saying it is deeply concerned about the defamation of religions and urging governments to prohibit it.

The European Union said the text was one-sided because it primarily focused on Islam.

The U.N. Human Rights Council, which is dominated by Arab and other Muslim countries, adopted the resolution on a 21-10 vote over the opposition of Europe and Canada.

The pressure to protect religions from defamation has been growing ever since a Danish magazine published caricatures of Muhammad, provoking riots across the Islamic world in 2006 in which dozens of people were killed. The publication of a different caricature in a Swedish newspaper last year again led to protests from Muslims.

Criticism is not defamation. Quoting their own book is not defamation. Demanding answers for their actions is not defamation. Telling them they are wrong is not defamation. It's freedom. Which the UN Human Rights Council apparently would like to walk all over. Putting some of the worst human rights offenders on such a council, what a wonderful idea.

I've been looking for a horror flick ever since I heard about it on tv. It's been quite awhile, and it was from one of those shows that give you a couple scenes that are really eerie and then switch to another movie without reminding you what movie you were just getting a clip from.

I believe it was about a young woman working in a toll booth, and there was a car that would drive up late at night with very odd or classical music accompanying it. The clip they showed was her ducking under the counter as the car came closer, and she started hearing the music as it got closer. I think it was something like if you heard the music, you knew bad shit was about to go down.

Does anyone know what this flick might be?

    Such tolerance...
Hopefully plenty of you got to watch the short flick Fitna, because LiveLeak.com was forced to censor it.
Following threats to our staff of a very serious nature, and some ill informed reports from certain corners of the British media that could directly lead to the harm of some of our staff, Liveleak.com has been left with no other choice but to remove Fitna from our servers.
This is a sad day for freedom of speech on the net but we have to place the safety and well being of our staff above all else. We would like to thank the thousands of people, from all backgrounds and religions, who gave us their support. They realised LiveLeak.com is a vehicle for many opinions and not just for the support of one.
Perhaps there is still hope that this situation may produce a discussion that could benefit and educate all of us as to how we can accept one anothers culture.
We stood for what we believe in, the ability to be heard, but in the end the price was too high.

A film about Islamic violence and censorship through threats has been forced off one site because of threats. And yet the outrage is over the film's perceived offense, not over these threats nor over what it criticizes. Is this the free society you want?

You can still find it on google and youtube, but you're going to have to find active links before they go down.

U.S. Will Approve New Nuclear Reactors
British official says she's been informed the U.S. will approve at least three new nuclear power plants
One of the U.K.'s top nuclear officials said today that she was told the U.S. will okay plans to build the first nuclear power plants since the accident at Three Mile Island nearly three decades ago. Lady Barbara Thomas Judge, chair of the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority, said that the chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission informed her that the NRC will approve three applications for new nuclear reactors that it's currently considering.
