Damn, writing about a bomb blast is mentally draining. Victims, triage, and just not fun. I'll be glad when this scene is done. At least this told me who the bad guy is gonna be. Or at least what kind of bad guy.
*
God knows what I'll dream about tonight. Last night among all the other storylines, I was running from bad guys in a security complex and I stumbled out of the building into the fenced enclosure where they kept their dragons. Nasty little red dragons with spines and needle sharp teeth and black eyes, but despite being bitten a couple times I managed to get on one's back and flew it out. It bit me a few more times during the flight. Not one of the pleasant flying dreams I've ever had. Hopefully no more family gatherings, though, 'cause that's where I landed, a pizza restaurant with games and an arcade where the family was all in one place. Bleh. | | 3:39a |
People's Republic of China threatened by one small singer. China to crack down on singers after Bjork outburstChina will tighten its controls over foreign singers and other performers after Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet!" at a Shanghai concert last weekend, the Ministry of Culture said on Friday.
Bjork chanted the name of the Chinese-ruled Himalayan region after performing her song "Declare Independence," which she has used in the past to promote independence movements in other places such as Kosovo.
The performance "not only broke Chinese laws and regulations and hurt the feelings of Chinese people, but also went against the professional code of an artist," the ministry said in a statement quoted by the official Xinhua news agency.
"Any attempt to separate Tibet from China will definitely be opposed by the Chinese people and all righteous men across the world." | | 3:30p |
Right at homeOnce a self-described "Dukakis liberal," Malkin had an interest in affirmative action. The two teamed on an article in which they came to the conclusion that using racial preferences in admissions harmed those who arrived on campus without enough academic training. "We interviewed a lot of very embittered people," she says.
The piece caused a firestorm. They were called " Hitler and Eva Braun." Minority groups shunned them. No critics, they noticed, engaged with the story's facts.

"As a woman and an ethnic minority, people demand a certain viewpoint from Michelle, but she has her own mind and her own opinions," says Ed Morrissey, creator of Captain's Quarters, another conservative blog. "That threatens their concepts of gender and ethnicity."
It also amuses her that so few of her critics realize "I actually believe what I believe." Why, she says, should being born "with brown skin and a uterus" confine her to any particular set of beliefs? | | 3:48p |
Woman jailed for 'worshipping tea pot'A sharia court in Malaysia jailed a woman for joining a "tea-pot worshipping" cult.
Kamariah Ali, a 57 year old former teacher, was arrested in 2005 when the government of the Muslim majority country demolished the two storey high sacred tea pot and other infrastructure of the "heretical" Sky Kingdom cult. For the eccentric sect, which emphasised ecumenical dialogue between religions, the tea pot symbolized the purity of water and "love pouring from heaven".
But in Malaysia, despite constitutional guarantees of freedom of worship, born Muslims such as Mrs Ali are forbidden from converting to other religions.
Passing sentence, the Sharia judge Mohammed Abdullah said: "The court is not convinced that the accused has repented and is willing to abandon any teachings contrary to Islam. I pray God will open the doors of your heart, Kamariah."
Mrs Ali has already been jailed once for apostasy, for 20 months in 1992. ( rest of the article ) | | 3:57p |
For those not in the know, a 1911 is a pistol. That day he needed it. An Encounter At Wal-MartIt was a balmy Sunday morning several years ago, and Little Darling had been saving her dollars and cents for a GameBoy. I am a man of the pinball generation, and I have little appreciation of video games. I see the results they build in skilled hand eye coordination among the younger laproscopic surgeons, compared to the surgeons of my own age strata, but still, I resisted buying her the toy. When she proudly announced she had the funds herself, I relented. Better to teach her the benefits of thrift than the tyranny of a father my wife told me. So, before church, we took off for Wal-Mart. She had her little purse of greenbacks and I had a 1911 under my sportscoat. | | 4:11p |
Cornered Cat Some folks say the most dangerous place in the world is between a Mama Bear and her cubs. It may be so. I've never met a Mama Bear, myself.
The most dangerous place I ever stood was between a cornered cat and an open door.
When a cat feels threatened, she gets away from the danger as quickly as she can. She doesn't care what damage she inflicts on her way to safety, but she's not interested in fighting for fighting's sake. She does only as much as she needs to do in order to escape. She doesn't deal in revenge. If she feels threatened, she simply leaves. Efficiently.
Until she needs to use them, her claws stay sheathed. She doesn't go around threatening to maul people. She's cuddly, she's cozy, she likes to curl up next to a crackling fire on a warm winter's day. She's great company.
But don't try to trap her in a bad situation.
This site is about women and guns, not about cats. But in a way, it's about the cornered cat in all of us. It's about the determination to get away from an attacker if you need to. It's about making the decision to say, "Not me. Not mine. Not today." And it's about the tools to make that decision stick.
If you have to fight ...
Fight like a cornered cat. At the very least, I totally recommend the Childproof...Isn't piece, as it's a really humorous dissuasion from ever having male children. | | 4:45p |

Nicaraguans celebrate mass for dogs MASAYA, Nicaragua (Reuters) - Hundreds of dogs, many dressed as babies or clowns, were taken to celebrate mass in this Nicaraguan town on Sunday, an annual ritual where the owners pray for their pets to be cured or avoid falling ill.
A long queue of Catholics, carrying their pets or leading them on leashes, waited their turn to pass by an image of a saint in a tiny church in this town 30 kilometres to the south of the Nicaragua capital, Managua.
The faithful thank the saint for curing their pets or ask for the dogs to be protected from illness. The town's priest always conducts a special canine mass.
"We brought him so he does not get sick," said local resident Nora Espinosa, talking about her six-month-old Basset Hound, dressed in a soccer outfit.
Locals say the tradition goes back to the colonial period after the Spanish conquest. | | 8:25p |
little dream quiz silent_myriad has a dream quiz up that I wanted to answer, but I know I'm gonna take a lot of space. 1) Who has had every sense involved in dreams? That's sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. 2) Who has an active left brain during sleep so they can do the impossible things like reading or working with numbers? 3) Who has been other people other than yourself? Bonus points if they aren't human. 4) Who has been people of the opposite gender? 5) Who has sex in their dreams? (Everyone) Who has sex while the opposite gender? 6) Who wakes up in their dreams and continues dreaming (the dream within a dream thing)? 7) Who has panic attacks or seizures (or other medical events like that)? (Note: that you do not have ever while awake.) 8) Who has phobias while dreaming that they do not have in real life? 9) Who feels pain in their dreams? To the point that when they wake up that part of the body is tingling? (And I'm not talking about sleeping on your arm so it falls asleep.) 10) Who dies in their dream (lots of people), but then continues dreaming by switching perspectives/becoming someone else? ( my answers ) | | 10:55p |
