...why did the article capitalize the word image? Mubarak: Muslims partly to blame for ImageCAIRO, Egypt - Muslims are facing cruel and false accusations about their faith but must bear some responsibility for the wrong impressions, President Hosni Mubarak said. "Shouldn't we Muslims shoulder part of the responsibility of these wrong ideas about Islam? Have we fulfilled our duty in correcting the image of Islam and the Muslims? What did we do to face a terrorism that wears Islam's cloak and targets the lives of the people," Mubarak said in the remarks that were televised live.
"We don't accept insulting our sanctities in the name of freedom of opinion or press, because disrespecting our beliefs inflames angry emotions, extremism and takes us toward grave paths," Mubarak said.
He cautioned against mixing religion and politics in international relations and tying Islam to "blind terrorism that knows no home or religion." It's cool to hear this from a head of state (I hope he's not assassinated for it). However, once again the right to freedom of speech is being castigated as an insult and disrespect if someone says something that offends. Why bother with freedom of speech, then? On the other hand, here he is admitting that the "insults" of someone else's opinions can drive some Islamic faithful to anger, extremism and "grave paths." Admitting there's a problem is the first step to recovery, but only if the addict extremist is willing to change. I wish more of the speech had been reported. That this is just a couple of soundbytes is painfully obvious. | | 12:40a |
I'm really tired of fixing my damn time settings... This is why I love 4chan. So much of my Avatar knowledge comes from them. And having caught the tail end of the Jin episode, I agree with much of their findings. In this world, 4chan is one of the few things that makes me rotflmao. | | 2:00a |
"He's a cool exec with a heart of steel" I'm not too hopeful for the Iron Man movie now that Robert Downey Jr. has been cast as Tony Stark. I am happy to see Jim Rhodes getting in the flick, although I doubt we'll get to see him as War Machine. I *really* hope rumors aren't true and that they aren't updating his story to the Gulf War with some stupidity about feeling guilt about his weapons projects tossed in. The conflict doesn't have to be so specific that it'll cast a political pall no matter which way they take it. Plus it sounds like they left out the character of the old scientist who helps him build the original suit. I definitely don't like that the suit is gonna be more of a "weapons platform" than a "flying suit." I'm sorry, but those jet boots are half the reason I liked that costume. I do admit I'm kinda glad I'll be seeing Mandarin on the screen, tho'. Mandarin rocks. But only if he has his rings. Updating him to be nothing more than a terrorist or arms dealer or anything else 'non-comic bookish' would suxxors muchly. Oh, and even tho' I haven't read any comics in months, I'm still up to date on what's going on in Marvel right now. And I'm on Iron Man's side in the Civil War, dammit. Iron Man on Wikipedia * Oh, here's something nifty I found: My Little Pony or Porn Star? OMG, I collect these and I only got four out of twelve! I never realized how bad it was... | | 3:25a |
"When a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man" And as much as I love it, I'm always nervous when posting on 4chan. You cannot be on that board and have any kind of dignity sensitivity. * Pass Fail Studios -- I love this comic. Shame there aren't more back pages, tho'. * I was watching Bravo's "30 More Scariest Moments" special today. It totally sucks, btw. Not nearly as good as their original Scariest Moments, and you could tell they were scraping for what they hadn't covered on that show in this one. Anyway, they had A Clockwork Orange listed (as well as 2001: A Space Odyssey, lol whut?) and they lingered over the rape scene to "I'm singing in the rain" as particularly horrific. And okay, I can get the whole "rape is horrific and da~yum to do it in front of the husband" but I never thought of that particular scene as horrible. It's so stylized in an already stylized film so I never felt much either way about it, as far as horror or empathy or anything like that. Truth be told, I did have an intense reaction to that scene, but a very different reaction than revulsion. And this was before I realized I was into rape, bondage and pain, well before I'd even seen more than even a couple of pictures of porn. Some things are definitely hardwired. The critics and people talking about the film also kept talking about how the movie was about how underneath the civilized front people are animals, and that the movie shows you can only keep that animal at bay for awhile before it comes back. Dude, I so totally didn't get that from the flick. Granted, I had my parents telling me what they thought it was about first, but I have to agree that it's about free will over what society tells us to do. Nevermind that the person in question was a vicious criminal, here we had people forcing a moral code onto another person who had no ability to resist and later no ability to defend himself when attacked. I thought that the ending (and the ending of the American version of the book before the last chapter was put back on) was a triumph of the human spirit to choose free will. True, Alex is a bastard, but he chooses to live the way he wants to. Imprison him or kill him, fine, but trying to beat him down into something different againt his will is no different than what he was doing to other people, it just had a nicer veneer of civility to it. Heh. All the kids in college looked at me weird when I mentioned that Alex was a role-model. You don't have to like everything about your role-models, after all, or even be a lot like them. | | 4:07a |
real reason is 'cause I'm already too slow writing as it is Fandom wank is like a tabloid. You roll your eyes at a lot of it, but you have to read at least the headlines to stay current in fandom news. I admit, I looked over the elite_hogwarts application on their faq page. But dude, waaay too much work for my lazy ass. Plus Knight of Walpurgis doesn't seem to be an option. And there's no way I could answer honestly and not be accused of pushing for Slytherin. | | 5:19p |
some day I will have a fast connection... Hey, that yaoi pic I posted? 4chan's rapidshare search has a section of huge files of fanart and screencaps. That I can't download 'cause I'm on a modem. ;_; Still, I can't keep the link to myself 'cause maybe someone might download the screencaps and then put them up where I might be able to see them individually? (okay, I only care about the blind mute boy Inu...) * Speaking of animals, my poor kitty got manhandled today. It's his own fault. He hates his kitty carrier 'cause he knows it's the evil alien space shuttle that takes him to the mother ship for unnatural probing. We fought to get him in there, he fought to stay out, and finally we had to wrap him in a towel before we got him in there. Then we took him to the vet, where he got dragged out, got his shots and got chipped. Took way less time to do all that than to get him in the dark box. edit: gonna try to get the screencaps. They're 40 megs, not 140 like I thought, so I might be able to snag 'em. | | 7:17p |
the violence didn't stop when the cameras turned off Why 112 cars are burning every dayThe figures are stark. An average of 112 cars a day have been torched across France so far this year and there have been 15 attacks a day on police and emergency services. Nearly 3,000 police officers have been injured in clashes this year. Officers have been badly injured in four ambushes in the Paris outskirts since September. Some police talk of open war with youths who are bent on more than vandalism.
“The thing that has changed over the past month is that they now want to kill us,” said Bruno Beschizza, the leader of Synergie, a union to which 40 per cent of officers belong. Action Police, a hardline union, said: “We are in a civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists.” I love the excuse given at the end, "The real problem is work. If they had any these riots would not have happened." El Paso's got the second highest jobless rate in the state and we're not burning anything down. Granted, they do studies on us trying to figure out why we're so laid back so it might be an unfair comparison in that regard but the fact remains that joblessness does not excuse violence. | | 8:21p |
oh goody, lj's slow again tonight Working on proofing Rainy Day Friends (Usagi/Leo) even thought it's not finished yet. Here's hoping I finish it tonight. Since my connection seems to be crap tonight (and 4chan is dead for the moment dammit), I'll just finish downloading some...uh... icon fodder before signing off today.
